Preparing the Health Workforce for Extreme Heat

Summer 2012 presented Canadians with record breaking heat in many regions across the country. Health Canada has conducted research to understand the needs of health care workers in addressing extreme heat and has outlined Guidelines to help prepare for the extreme heat.

The “Extreme Heat Events Guidelines: Technical Guide for Health Care Workers” provides information on the recognition, treatment and prevention of heat-related illnesses.  Furthermore, Health Canada has developed an on-demand accredited “Extreme Heat Events Program” this online course (extremeheatevents.ca) was developed specifically for health care workers in collaboration with several partners.

This presentation will address health promotion and injury prevention for vulnerable individuals, risk assessment of individuals for health practitioners, identification of heat illness signs and symptoms, and clinical recommendations to reduce health risks. The newly released accredited "Extreme Heat Events Program" developed in collaboration with McMaster University, the Ontario College of Family Physicians and Clean Air Partnership will also be presented.

Dr. Fiona Frappier
Scientist, Climate Change and Health Office, Health Canada

Dr. Fiona Frappier is a scientist at Health Canada's Climate Change and Health Office and leads the file on preparing the health work force to protect their patients and clients form the health effects of climate change and in particular the health effects of extreme heat. Fiona was a lead author of the Extreme Heat Events Guidelines: Technical Guide for Health Care Workers and associated Fact Sheets for health care workers. These Guidelines were prepared by Health Canada with the advice of the Health Professionals and Information and Training Advisory Committee.
